Brick Street Restaurant is located in the "Up Town" area of North Vernon in the historic Howard Couchman Furs building, which was built in 1870. Initially a childhood endeavor of Couchman and his friends who trapped muskrats, Couchman eventually built his business to employ 13 women involved in cutting and sewing furs to make coats, scarves, and other items. Local hunters, trappers, and farmers sold and traded their goods for nearly 80 years. Howard Couchman furs were of the finest quality, and it said as much on every label: Furs of the Better Grade.
Established in 2017, Brick Street Restaurant was created from a love of family, history, antiques, and food. Owner and proprietor, Stephanie Giddens, has a family connection to the food world. Her maternal grandmother, Loretta Johnson, owned a restaurant during the 1950’s. Owning and operating a restaurant has given Stephanie the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of her grandmother.
Antiques and history are a big part of what Brick Street Restaurant is about. Throughout the dining room, as well as the front display windows, you will find a wide array of vintage and antique items, including Howard Couchman furs.
